The Safe Shelters Act of 2024 prohibits registered sex offenders from entering or using emergency shelters established in response to federally declared disasters, except to seek information about designated shelters. The bill authorizes the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator to designate separate emergency shelters in federal buildings or federal prisons exclusively for covered sex offenders during disasters. Violations carry penalties of up to 5 years imprisonment and/or fines. FEMA and the General Services Administration must maintain lists of available federal facilities for potential designation.
