The Hire Veterans Act requires the Director of the Office of Personnel Management to establish a five-year pilot program to identify, test, and refer veterans for employment with federal land management agencies (Forest Service, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Bureau of Reclamation). Veterans would be assessed for strengths and abilities in specified career fields such as firefighting, forest engineering, landscape restoration, and ecology, and may receive noncompetitive appointments to supervisory or nonsupervisory positions if they demonstrate necessary qualifications. The bill also authorizes federal land management agencies to establish training programs for veterans who do not initially meet position requirements and allows credential waivers when appropriate.
