The HEROS Act amends the Social Security Act to exempt widows and widowers of police officers, firefighters, and correctional officers who died in the line of duty from the government pension offset. The government pension offset currently reduces Social Security survivor benefits for spouses and family members of deceased workers who also receive a government pension. This bill creates an exception to that offset for surviving family members of federal, state, and local law enforcement officers, firefighters, and correctional officers.
