The Let America Vote Act requires states to permit unaffiliated (independent) voters to participate in primary elections for federal office, with restrictions on sharing voter information with political parties and protections against treating primary voters as party members. The bill also extends these requirements to state and local elections as a condition of receiving federal election administration funding, and includes a separate provision prohibiting noncitizens from voting in any taxpayer-funded election. States that comply receive transition assistance grants equal to 2 percent of their Help America Vote Act funding for five years.
