Summary
This bill amends Medicare's payment rules for manual wheelchairs by requiring the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to establish separate billing codes for ultralightweight manual wheelchairs based on construction materials, specifically distinguishing between wheelchairs with titanium or carbon fiber bases and those without. Beginning January 1, 2025, Medicare beneficiaries would be permitted to purchase or rent upgraded titanium or carbon fiber wheelchairs, with suppliers able to charge beneficiaries the difference between the standard Medicare payment and the fair market value of the upgraded model. The bill requires suppliers to provide advance notice to beneficiaries of their potential out-of-pocket costs for such upgrades.
