The No Shame at School Act of 2024 amends the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act to strengthen protections for students with unpaid meal fees and expand free meal eligibility. It requires schools to automatically certify eligible students for free or reduced-price meals retroactively to the start of the school year, and prohibits schools from stigmatizing students with meal debt through physical segregation, special identification, withholding grades or activities, or disposing of already-served food. Schools are also barred from using debt collectors to pursue unpaid meal fees or directing collection communications directly to students.
