The Prescription Drug Monitoring Act of 2024 requires states receiving federal funding for prescription drug monitoring programs to implement several measures to track and prevent controlled substance misuse. Beginning one year after enactment, covered states must require prescribers to consult their state's monitoring program before initiating treatment with schedule II–IV controlled substances and every three months thereafter, require dispensers to report prescriptions within 24 hours, and establish proactive notifications to practitioners when misuse patterns are detected. States must also conduct data analysis, report findings to law enforcement and licensing boards, and share data with other states; noncompliance may result in withholding of federal grant funds.
