What they said
May 21, 2026
The resolution calls for Congress to establish a national child poverty reduction target and make permanent investments in children comparable to the 2021 expanded Child Tax Credit, along with strengthened support for programs providing healthcare, housing, education, and food assistance to children in poverty.
The statement calls for permanent investments in children comparable to the 2021 expanded Child Tax Credit, along with strengthened support for healthcare, housing, education, and food assistance. The bill increases the refundable Child Tax Credit amounts for 2023–2025 and modifies earned income tax credit rules, which directly aligns with the statement's support for expanded child tax credits. However, the bill's increases are temporary (expiring after 2025) rather than permanent, and the bill does not address the statement's calls for strengthened healthcare, housing, education, or food assistance programs. The rep's NO vote on a bill that partially advances the stated goal but lacks permanence and breadth suggests either objection to the temporary nature, the omission of other child-support programs, or bundled provisions in Titles II and III (business tax provisions) that the rep opposed.

Tlaib and Jacobs Introduce Resolution to End Child Poverty
Position: The resolution calls for Congress to establish a national child poverty reduction target and make permanent investments in children comparable to the 2021 expanded Child Tax Credit, along with strengthened support for programs providing healthcare, housing, education, and food assistance to children in poverty.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) and Congresswoman Sara Jacobs (CA-51) introduced the Ending Child Poverty Resolution, which calls on Congress to fully invest in solving the United States’ child poverty crisis.
The United States has one of the highest child poverty rates among wealthy nations, double that of countries like the Netherlands or Finland. As of 2024, more than 9.7 million children lived in poverty in the United States, a 154 percent increase since 2021. At the same time, U.S. federal spending on children has been declining for years. In a country as wealthy as the United States, widespread child poverty is a moral and policy failure.
This legislation was first introduced in the United States House of Representatives by former Congresswoman Barbara Lee.
“Congress has the power to end child poverty and support our nation’s most vulnerable, yet continues to defund and destroy the federal programs that help our children get fed, clothed, housed, and educated,” said Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib. “More and more funding is allocated towards weapons and war instead of ensuring our children and families are supported. I’m proud to introduce this resolution with Rep. Jacobs and re-commit Congress to ending the child poverty crisis.”
“In the wealthiest nation in the world, no child should lie awake at night wondering how they will get their next meal, or if their family can afford somewhere to live. There is no excuse for our government giving billions of dollars in handouts to the wealthy while eviscerating the social safety net programs that help families and children, said Congresswoman Sara Jacobs. “It is time for Congress to step up and end the child poverty crisis. I’m proud to introduce this resolution with Rep. Tlaib, so we can highlight where people are falling through the gaps, and implement programs to support the families our systems have failed for years.”
The resolution outlines the material hardship, food insecurity, health issues, and instability that poverty causes and highlights the U.S. government’s failure to address these issues. To end child poverty, this legislation calls for establishing a national child poverty reduction target to build the political will for change, in addition to investments in children on the scale of the 2021 Child Tax Credit, which nearly cut child poverty in half. In the face of longstanding underinvestment in children, the resolution encourages permanent support for policies and programs that strengthen children’s learning opportunities and access to healthcare, housing, and other necessities.
The Ending Child Poverty Resolution is cosponsored by Representatives Pramila Jayapal, LaMonica McIver, Gwen Moore, Kelly Morrison, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Lateefah Simon, and Frederica S. Wilson.
This legislation is endorsed by: Caring Across Generations, Chamber of Mothers, Child Welfare League of America, Children’s Advocacy Centers of Michigan, Coalition on Human Needs, First Focus Campaign for Children, Michigan Chamber for Reproductive Justice, Mothering Justice Action Fund, National Healthy Start Association, National Women’s Law Center Action Fund, Our Revolution, Partners for Dignity and Rights, and ZERO TO THREE.
“Child poverty is a choice,” said Bruce Lesley, President, at First Focus Campaign for Children. “Lawmakers have in the past chosen to alleviate child poverty — which affects every aspect of a child’s development — for instance, by improving the Child Tax Credit in 2021, a choice that cut the rate of child poverty nearly in half. The Congressional Resolution on Ending Child Poverty put forward by Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Sara Jacobs recognizes that what lawmakers need are not more solutions, but the political will to enact them. We strongly support this resolution and call on all members of Congress to join these champions for children in supporting the nation’s future.”
“Mothering Justice proudly endorses the Ending Child Poverty Resolution because mothers, especially Black and Brown mothers, have been sounding the alarm on this crisis for years,” said Danielle Atkinson, Founder and National Executive Director, at Mothering Justice. “When the expanded Child Tax Credit expired in 2022, 4 million children were pushed back into poverty overnight. Our members lived those consequences. This resolution centers the children most often left behind: those in immigrant families, in Puerto Rico, and in their most critical years of development, and it names child poverty for what it is: a racial justice issue, an economic justice issue, and a moral failure that this country has the resources to address.”
“The Michigan Chamber for Reproductive Justice applauds Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Sara Jacobs for naming child poverty as the crisis it is. No child should have to grow up without stable housing, nutritious food, clean water, health care, or the resources every family needs to thrive,” said Cassy Jones McBryde, Executive Director, at the Michigan Chamber for Reproductive Justice. “Child poverty is a policy choice, and ending it requires the courage to invest in children with the same urgency we bring to every national priority. We are grateful for Reps. Tlaib and Jacobs’ leadership and are proud to stand with efforts that move families from survival toward stability, dignity, and joy.”

Tlaib Introduces Resolution Recognizing 78 Years of Ongoing Palestinian Nakba
Position: The resolution recognizes the 78th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba, characterizes Israeli actions as genocide and ethnic cleansing, calls for reinstatement of UNRWA funding, and asserts Palestinian refugees' right of return.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) re-introduced the resolution Recognizing the Ongoing Nakba and Palestinian Refugees’ Rights.
May 15, 2026, marks the 78th anniversary of the Nakba. The Nakba, which means “catastrophe” in Arabic, refers to the mass expulsion and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their homes and homeland during the creation of the state of Israel (1947-49). The Nakba did not end in 1948, but continues to this day as Israeli forces continue to commit genocide in Gaza and dispossess Palestinians across all of Palestine.
“The Nakba never ended. Today, the Israeli apartheid regime is committing genocide in Gaza, violently erasing entire communities across the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, and bombing Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. It is a campaign to erase Palestinians from existence,” said Congresswoman Tlaib. “War criminal Netanyahu and his cabinet have repeatedly threatened to ethnically cleanse the entire Palestinian population in Gaza, annex the land, and permanently occupy it. Today, they are extending these same threats towards southern Lebanon. As we mark the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, we honor all of those killed since the ethnic cleansing of Palestine began and all those who have been forced from their homes and violently displaced from their land. This immense trauma, including the loss of their loved ones and connections to the communities they grew up in, needs to be repaired. True peace must be built on justice and the inalienable right of return for Palestinian refugees.”
The Israeli government also continues the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians through illegal settlements and segregated communities in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the destruction of Palestinian homes and seizure of agricultural land, the revocation of residency rights, and the denial of the internationally recognized legal right of return of millions of Palestinian refugees. The United States is an accomplice in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, providing endless funding and weapons.
Congresswoman Tlaib’s resolution commemorates the 78th anniversary of the Nakba and promotes better education and understanding of this well-documented history. The resolution also calls on Congress to reinstate support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which provides live-saving humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees.
“Thank you to Congresswoman Tlaib for her unwavering commitment to the fight for Palestinian liberation, and for representing the voices of Palestinian Americans so well through the introduction of this resolution,” said IMEU Policy Project Executive Director Margaret DeReus. “The Nakba is not just a historical event, but an ongoing horror for Palestinians—and the U.S. has been complicit for decades. This May marks 78 years of Israel’s continuous efforts to erase Palestinians from their homeland. It is the height of cruelty that while so many Americans struggle to pay for a home here in the U.S., our government sends billions to enable Israel to forcibly remove Palestinians from their homes instead.”
