The Sell Your Stocks or Step Down Act would prohibit the President, Vice President, Members of Congress, senior federal officials, federal judges, and their spouses and dependents from owning or trading stocks, digital assets, commodities, futures, and prediction market contracts while in federal service. Covered individuals would have 30 days from the bill's enactment (or from taking office) to divest of such holdings at fair market value. The bill establishes penalties for non-compliance, including daily fees of up to 10 percent of the fair market value of non-divested holdings (capped at 50 percent total) and additional fees plus profit disgorgement for new purchases or trades in violation of the restriction.
