“In the last month alone, there have been four deaths in Michigan Department of Corrections facilities that we know of. This is not the first time serious issues in MDOC facilities have occurred, as numerous unions first called on Director Washington to resign in 2020 due to her mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, there has been a chronic staffing shortage of corrections officers, and issues about prison conditions have consistently plagued MDOC. When the families of inmates, state legislators, and other community stakeholders have attempted to address these concerns, they have been dismissed by the department every time. In the richest country in the world, everyone deserves to be treated with dignity. MDOC, under Director Washington’s leadership, is failing this fundamental goal. The evidence is clear: Director Washington must resign immediately before more harm is done.”

Position: Congressman Thanedar led a letter urging the Secretaries of State and Interior to extend and redesignate Yemen for Temporary Protected Status to protect approximately 1,400 Yemeni nationals currently in the United States.

“Donald Trump’s planned federal seizure of Detroit’s ballots is a racially and politically motivated attempt to take away Detroit’s political power. This would trample on the Constitution and rights of Detroiters. The people of Detroit deserve political autonomy just as much as anyone else, and Trump’s attempt to take it from them is disgraceful.
The Constitution is crystal clear - states are in charge of how they run their elections to choose who gets their electoral votes. Donald Trump has no right to make Detroit turn its ballots over to him, and it’s clear he is doing this to intimidate and suppress voter turnout in Detroit. These actions are a grave violation of the Constitution’s Electors Clause and completely unacceptable.
Trump’s decision to single out and go after Detroit is because Detroit has the highest percentage Black population of any large city in the United States, and because it has voted overwhelmingly against Donald Trump in all of the past three Presidential Elections. I will be fighting hand in hand with other Detroit leaders to protect our city against this outrageous attack and preserve our democracy.”

Position: Congressman Thanedar advocates for tax relief for middle-class and working families earning $100,000 or less, funded by raising federal income tax rates on high earners to 70% and eliminating federal income taxes on unemployment benefits and strike pay.
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Shri Thanedar marked Tax Day 2026 by calling for a more just tax code by providing massive relief for middle-class families, paid for by taxing the richest Americans.
“I’ve lived on both sides of the coin. I grew up in abject poverty, but was able to find success later in life. For decades, the ultra-rich in America have seen their wealth skyrocket, while lower- and middle-class families have seen their share of the pie dwindle. The cost of living has increased for everyday Americans, while the rich get more and more tax breaks. We need to give working people a massive break, and finally make the rich pay their fair share,” said Congressman Thanedar. “My Middle Class Tax Cut Act would eliminate federal income taxes for families making $100,000 or less and gradually increase rates for the rich, ultimately making millionaires and billionaires pay a top rate of 70%, a rate which the wealthiest Americans paid until the Reagan administration.”
Additionally, his Tax Relief for Fired Workers Act would create a more just tax code by permanently repealing federal income taxes on unemployment benefits, and his Picket Line Protection Act would alleviate the financial burden faced by striking workers by exempting strike pay from federal income taxes. Congressman Shri Thanedar Calls on Cabinet to Remove Trump from Office | U.S. Congressman Shri Thanedar
Position: Congressman Thanedar calls for the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove President Trump from office, citing threats against Iran, unauthorized military strikes, unconstitutional tariffs, immigration enforcement actions, and threats against Members of Congress as evidence of unfitness to serve.
Washington, DC - Today, Congressman Shri Thanedar (MI-13) called for the invocation of the 25th Amendment to remove Donald Trump from office in a letter to the 16 members of Donald Trump’s cabinet. The letter cited Trump’s recent threat to wipe out the entire Iranian civilization, as well as numerous other instances of unhinged behavior from Trump, as the reasons for his removal.
“For 15 months, our country has been pushed to its brink,” wrote Congressman Thanedar. “The time for action is now, and the American people are desperate for the White House to end its harmful rhetoric and posturing. You must invoke the 25th Amendment against President Trump, declare him unfit to serve, and remove him from office immediately. History will remember the inaction of this administration for not doing enough to prevent Trump from plunging our great country into chaos, but that all can change if you do your part and stop this madness.”
The 25th Amendment allows the President of the United States to be removed from office if the Vice President and a majority of his cabinet submit a written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Congressman Thanedar’s call for Trump’s removal follows a long string of unhinged behavior from the President that has exposed him as mentally unfit to carry out the duties of the office.
In the letter, Thanedar laid out a number of Trump’s actions that warranted his removal, including:
Conducting an unauthorized strike on Iranian facilities in June 2025, then claiming that Iran’s nuclear facilities were “completely and totally obliterated.”
A year later, forcing the United States into another conflict with Iran to “deny Iran the ability to have a nuclear weapon”, directly contradicting his own statements that Iran’s nuclear ambitions had been destroyed.
Engaging in a war with Iran with zero preparation, highlighted by the fact that there was no plan to secure the Strait of Hormuz, leading to a global oil crisis.
Stating that, “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” in reference to the Iranian people and targeting civilian infrastructure like bridges and power stations, which constitutes a war crime as defined by the Geneva Convention.
Enacting “Liberation Day” tariffs, which were found unconstitutional, caused Americans to face increased prices on everyday expenses and created divisions with trade partners.
Authorizing large-scale immigration enforcement campaigns in cities across the country, leading to increased fear amongst our immigrant population and the deaths of Americans.
Calling for the execution of sitting Members of Congress, during a time when the House Sergeant at Arms has recorded the largest number of threats to Members in history.
“These are just some examples of the many nonsensical, irrational, and senseless actions President Trump has taken,” said Congressman Thanedar. “There is no rhyme or reason to these actions, which can lead one to only one natural conclusion: these are not the actions of a sane person, nor one who is fit to serve as president of the most powerful nation in the world.
