Summary
The SAWMILL Act establishes a Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program under which the Secretaries of Agriculture and Interior shall provide federal loan guarantees to sawmill and wood-processing facilities in rural areas. The program targets facilities located within 250 miles of federal lands identified as high or very high priority for ecological restoration involving vegetation removal, with the goal of reducing the cost of restoration projects. The bill authorizes up to $220 million in total loan guarantees and requires the Secretaries to identify eligible federal lands within one year and at least every five years thereafter.
