Summary
This bill would allow the Secretary of the Interior to acquire land or interests in land within a designated area outside the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine, from willing sellers, through donation, or exchange, and prohibits the use of eminent domain for such acquisitions. Acquired land would be added to the monument with its boundaries adjusted accordingly, and the monument would be administered under the Act, the 2016 Proclamation, and National Park System laws. The bill also requires allowing existing hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation on acquired land, requires allowing noncommercial hand gathering of fiddlehead ferns, authorizes limited noncommercial timber harvests, and directs public safety education regarding logging trucks. It further permits the Secretary to acquire up to 10 acres outside the monument for administrative and visitor facilities.
