Following the Nazi Germany surrender in 1945, the United Kingdom (UK) held parliamentary elections. Wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his Conservative Party faced an electoral challenge from the socialist-leaning Labour Party.
Labour, whose Let Us Face the Future manifesto made socialist policy promises of nationalizing sectors of its economy and raising taxes on the wealthy, won in a landslide.
But the resulting Labour government policies would create a sluggish economy, mishandle housing shortages and extend wartime food rationing.
The intense uproar over the rationing of bread and flour turned public sentiment against Labour. In 1951, the UK elected Churchill once more, this time to help put an end to the rationing.
In addition to Churchill’s reforms, more structural reforms to the socialist policies were later made by Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher’s actions helped propel the country into an era marked by economic growth.
France’s socialist policies are in today’s spotlight. France is struggling to afford spending on public programs.
As Jonah Goldberg with the online news publication The Dispatch highlighted, government spending accounts for 57% of France’s gross domestic product (compared to 23% for the U.S.).
France also spends more than any other European country on “social protection.”
This formula has French policymakers in a pickle.
How would the government address its budget?
When the moment came, France opted for budget cuts impacting teachers, students and communities.
And how did the French public respond?
For weeks, mass protests and riots engulfed the country. The protests have been seemingly hijacked by far-left groups advocating for the collapse of French institutions.
French President Emmanuel Macron blamed the “political and seditious acts by ultra-left groups” for the riots and looting.
This unrest resulted in an historic town hall being burned, tens of thousands of police officer deployments and the nation of France being on edge.
The French dilemma is just the latest evidence of what Thatcher described as the problem with socialism. “Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people’s money,” she said in 1976.
In addition to the challenges of socialism, the French protests gave us an inside look at the ultra-left groups and their more concerning threat: to tear down Western Civilization.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently delivered a speech in front of the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. It was right here where the fathers of Western Civilization planted the seeds of law, citizenship and democratic principles.
Rubio tied the founding of our country to Greece: “The men who founded my country were fascinated by the heritage we inherited from yours...The civilization of Athens and Rome transformed an infant seaboard republic into a continental empire.”
I stand with Secretary Rubio’s commitment to preserve the ideals, freedoms and strengths that ultimately made the Western World. Like he said, the essential traits to define the West include “fierce individuality and relentless ambition; daring exploration and invention; a yearning for discovery, for adventure, risk and glory.”
In Congress, I will continue to fight back against the radical wing of the Democratic Party, particularly the policies of the Democratic Socialists of America. They want to redefine what America stands for, transforming America into a socialist country and in my opinion making the United States weak.
While we still need a social safety net, I want everyone to have the opportunity to succeed in America. And where possible, to be able to lift themselves up by hard work, determination and ingenuity. This possibility of being able to make oneself a success is the gateway to reaching the American Dream. Socialism throughout history has extinguished opportunities of reaching great success.

This grant money was made available through the DOT Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant program.
Road improvements will include 10.8 miles of double centerline striping, 10.7 miles of rumble strips, 1.38 miles of high-friction surface treatments, 60 signs, and targeted transition zone upgrades.
Project work will be directed towards Jewell Ridge Road, Falls Mills Road, Baptist Valley Road, Wardell Road, Indian Creek Road and Kents Ridge Road.
In May 2026, Congressman Griffith authored a letter of support for a local transportation safety project in Tazewell County.

This money is to be supported by additional money from the region and industry partners.”
“President Trump promised to bring advanced manufacturing back to America, and this grant delivers in southern and southwest Virginia. Nearly $25 million in federal funding supported by $195 million in total commitments will train 2,000 workers and give local manufacturers the test beds to design, prototype, and bring new products to market faster than ever before,” said U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
These funds were made possible through the EDA Disaster Supplemental Grant Program.
Ninth District private sector partners also making commitments to these various projects include Hollingsworth and Vose as well as MELD Manufacturing. Coalition partners also include the Roanoke-Blacksburg Innovation Alliance and Virginia Manufacturing Association.

The bill seeks to improve the clinical trial landscape, promoting clinical research in routine health care settings, accelerating new-treatment development, and increasing innovative therapy access.
“Patients in rural communities like Virginia’s Ninth District often travel hours to participate in clinical trials for needed medical treatments,” said Chairman Griffith. “This reality discourages people from participating in clinical trials and hampers research efforts.
“Clinical trials play a major role in treatment discovery and research breakthroughs, especially for rare diseases where there are few, if any, available therapies on the market at times. The Faster Clinical Trials Act will expand research efforts, facilitate treatment options and support American patients, particularly in rural America.
“I thank Congressman Auchincloss for his proactive work, including working with me and my team, to develop these ideas in a comprehensive bill. I look forward to continued collaboration on policy ideas.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new federal funding for U.S. communities through the Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, Revolving Loan Fund and Cleanup grant program. The EPA awarded Mount Rogers Planning District Commission, based in Marion, Virginia, a $1.5 million assessment coalition grant to support brownfield inventories, planning, environmental assessments, community outreach and cleanup activities at a local brownfield site.
Congressman Griffith continues to voice his support for the Brownfields Program, which delivers millions of dollars to Southwest Virginia communities to help with potential economic development projects.

“Rural communities, including those in Virginia’s Ninth District, benefit economically and environmentally from the redevelopment of local brownfield sites.
“This EPA Brownfields grant for $1.5 million helps Mount Rogers Planning District Commission take steps to redevelop local brownfield sites.”
Mount Rogers Planning District Commission serves the Counties of Bland, Carroll, Grayson, Smyth, Washington and Wythe as well as the Cities of Bristol and Norton.
The Brownfields Program empowers states, communities and other stakeholders to work together to prevent, assess, safely clean up and sustainably reuse brownfields.
A brownfield site is real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant.
Brownfield Assessment grants provide funding for brownfield inventories, planning, environmental assessments and community outreach.
According to the EPA, Assessment Coalition grants are designed for one “lead” eligible entity to partner with two to four eligible entities that do not have the capacity to apply for and manage their own EPA cooperative agreement and otherwise would not have access to Brownfields grant resources.

Some of those letters have gone to encourage the Trump Administration to be aggressive in promoting coal.
And the President, always a coal supporter, has heard our voice.
Perhaps no president this century has been as supportive of coal as President Donald Trump.
What has happened since Trump’s January 2025 inauguration?
Numerous pro-coal Executive Actions. I proudly attended events at the White House to celebrate announcements which invest in America’s beautiful clean coal, fight anti-coal actions taken by Presidents Obama and Biden and give coal a seat at the energy table.
The Obama-Biden “War on Coal” constrained American coal production, which encouraged the world to look elsewhere for coal.
Countries like India and China, looking to support the energy needs of their billion-plus populations, view American coal as a key resource.
According to a graphic online from Visual Capitalist, in 2024, China and India accounted for nearly 35% of U.S. coal exports.
China in particular is historically a major buyer of U.S. metallurgical coal, which is the type of coal used to make steel. The coal mined in Southwest Virginia is mainly metallurgical coal and had been sold to China in the first Trump Administration.
But the Chinese Communist Party took actions to disrupt American coal access to Chinese markets, threaten U.S. coal mining jobs and rattle our coal communities.
Data provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration notes the impact of Chinese tariff increases on U.S. coal exports. From 2024 to 2025, U.S. coal exports to China dropped a dramatic 92 percent!
In response to China’s anti-U.S. coal moves, I helped lead efforts to engage the Trump Administration.
As Chinese President Xi Jinping prepared to visit DC for trade negotiations, I requested President Trump prioritize American coal in the negotiations.
Following the late September negotiations, President Trump announced that China will import at least 10 million metric tons of American coal in 2027 and another 10 million metric tons in 2028!
This announcement means coal business in America will get a boost. Foreign belief in American coal will continue to present major opportunities for economic growth, domestic coal jobs and certainty for America’s coal operators.
I am proud to help secure this trade win for American communities. It is a positive outcome that confirms the strong demand for resources that our miners work every day to produce.
I am also fighting for another positive outcome that impacts our region’s coal.
Currently, one of the last remaining coal-fired power plants in Virginia is the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center (VCHEC) in St. Paul, Virginia.
As one of the 10 newest coal plants to be constructed in America, VCHEC employs world-class emissions control technologies that reduce carbon harms to the environment. Further, the plant cleans up waste coal sites, like gob piles, and eliminates mine drainage.
The current VCHEC owner and operator is Dominion Energy. However, Dominion is engaged in a new merger proposal with NextEra Energy.
Should the merger secure approval from Virginia regulatory authorities, it would potentially put the VCHEC under the control of NextEra.
As an advocate for VCHEC, I voiced the plant’s importance to both Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC), the regulatory authority responsible for reviewing the merger proposal.
With a SCC decision expected in January, I will continue to monitor discussion on the merger and its potential impacts on VCHEC.
Protecting our region’s coal assets through the VCHEC is essential to support coal jobs, provide net environmental benefits as shown by our clean coal technologies and serve reliable as well as affordable electricity.
Coal plants can be particularly helpful for our electric grid to withstand challenges and prevent the threat of blackout periods.
Accordingly, while the Department of Energy works to ensure there is enough energy available for American consumers, I believe Southwest Virginia coal is an indispensable resource that can help meet the growth in electricity demands.
Further, as a co-chair of the Congressional Coal Caucus, I will continue fighting and promoting energy solutions and trade relationships that boost the prospects for American coal.
